Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Technician

The Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Technician program prepares students for entry level positions in the automotive service industry by focusing on the knowledge and skills needed to work on a variety of systems such as engines, drivetrain, brakes, electrical, and steering & suspension. Students learn to conduct basic repairs and maintenance on automobiles and light truck systems. This program is designed for those who wish to be certified in basic entry skills as a service technician. After successful completion, students who wish to continue growing in the automotive service field can transfer up to 300 clock hours to FMTC’s Master Automotive Service Technology program.

The Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Technician Program is comprised of four courses:

OCP A Maintenance and Light Repair Technician 1

Focus: Shop Fundamentals & Safety
Students gain the essential “shop-floor” skills needed for immediate entry into the industry. This course covers professional safety protocols, precision tool usage, and the core fundamentals of engine operation. Students will master basic technician tasks, such as fluid services and shop equipment operation, setting the foundation for professional ASE certification.

Maintenance and Light Repair Technician 2

Focus: Drivetrain & Brake Systems
This course moves into critical safety systems, focusing on professional brake service and drivetrain maintenance. Students learn to perform comprehensive visual inspections, service disc and drum brakes, and maintain transmission systems. Technical training emphasizes accuracy in documenting “the three C’s” (Concern, Cause, and Correction) to meet industry-standard repair order requirements.

Maintenance and Light Repair Technician 3

Focus: Electrical Systems & Engine Performance
Students transition to the increasingly complex world of automotive electronics. This module covers battery testing, charging system diagnostics, and basic lighting and accessory repair. Training includes using professional diagnostic equipment to verify electrical circuit integrity, a core component of the ASE G1 exam.

Maintenance and Light Repair Technician 4

Focus: Suspension, Steering & HVAC
The final course prepares students for the full scope of light repair, focusing on suspension geometry, steering systems, and climate control maintenance. Students master tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), wheel balancing, and advanced alignment inspections. This course serves as the final preparation for students to sit for their ASE G1 credentials and enter the workforce as certified professionals.

What You’ll Learn

  • Proficiently explain and apply required shop and personal safety tasks relating to the automotive industry.
  • Explain and apply required tasks associated with the proper use and handling of tools and equipment relating to the automotive industry.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in preparing vehicles for routine pre/post maintenance and customer services.
  • Explain and apply proficiently the diagnosis, service and repair of engines, cylinder heads, valve train, lubrication, and cooling systems.
  • Explain and apply proficiently the diagnosis, service and repair of electrical/electronic system components, battery, starting, charging, lighting, instrument cluster, driver information, and body electrical systems.
  • Explain and apply proficiently the diagnosis, service and repair of front and rear suspension systems, wheel alignment, and wheels and tires.
  • Explain and apply proficiently the diagnosis, service, and repair of drum\disc brake, hydraulics, power assist units, electronic brakes, and related (wheel bearings, parking brake, electrical, etc.) systems.
  • Explain and apply proficiently the diagnosis, service and repair of heating and air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and engine cooling, operating and related control systems.
  • Explain and apply proficiently the diagnosis, service and repair of engine computerized controls, fuel, air induction, exhaust, and emission control systems.
  • Explain and apply proficiently the diagnosis, service, repair and overhaul of in-vehicle and off-vehicle automatic transmissions/transaxles.
  • Explain and apply proficiently the diagnosis, service and repair of manual drivetrain, clutches, transmissions/transaxles, drive and half-shafts, universal and constant velocity joints, differential case assemblies, drive axles, four-wheel and all-wheel drive systems.

Employment Opportunities

Students who complete this course can expect to earn a starting salary of $20+ per hour (Actual wages vary according to education, experience, and certifications.)
